Apple also announced a new macOS dubbed "High Sierra" that should please Mac users on both the professional and consumer side. Google and Amazon are betting that majority customers will just not care for it. These giants are battling over still-emerging fields that are expected to turn into technological gold mines, much the way personal computers and smartphones became moneymaking machines in previous decades.

Members of the media photograph a prototype Apple HomePod during the annual Apple Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) in San Jose, California, U.S. June 5, 2017. And as The Verge mentions, the Home Pod also has a "Musicologist" feature that "works with Apple Music to stream the music you ask the speaker's built-in Siri to play". It's unclear how Apple's music service will integrate with HomePod, although Apple's website boasts the smart speaker as having access to Apple Music's 40 million songs, so that seems to confirm it.

If Apple unveils a rival to internet-connected speakers from Amazon and Google, it wouldn't be the first time that Apple hops on the bandwagon of a technology product popularized by a competitor. Google Home followed in October and Microsoft's assistant, Cortana, is also finding a home in home speakers. You'll also find an Apple-designed 4-inch woofer, 6 microphone array, and Apple's A8 chip to power it all. This is the same processor found in the latest generation Apple iPhone. Respected US reviewer Harry McCracken says it does sound pretty good for a speaker of its size too - at least in Apple's demo.

Like those other products it is created to be a digital home assistant, capable of answering questions about maths as well as music-related enquiries - but it comes with some Apple quirks.

The iPhone control center, lock screen, and notification center are all getting major visual redesigns, with an eye toward offering more information to the user.

"The fact that Apple is claiming to marry really great and smart audio with a smart assistant and cloud music service makes this device unique in the market so far".

Information that is transmitted to Apple's servers will be encrypted and sent using an anonymous Siri identifier.

Apple had plenty of other announcements. Another Safari feature will stop video from automatically playing on websites. It will not actually block ads, though. It's part of Apple's effort to entice professionals with tablets that can handle many tasks previously reserved for laptops. It's unclear what happens to the data once its on Apple's servers.

HomePod capped a keynote presentation that included updates to Apple's iPad and Mac laptop lines, and upgraded operating software enabling augmented reality for iPhones and iPads.

Among the new features of iOS 11 is the ability to make person-to-person payments through Apple's messaging app, thanks to new integration with the Apple Pay system.
