Thomas has now won four times on the PGA Tour this season and five times in his career.

Thomas then hit a poor second shot that landed ten feet over the green but managed to chip it within ten feet of the hole.

Thomas held his nerve to card a final round 68 and finish eight under for the tournament, two shots clear of Italy's Francesco Molinari, American Patrick Reed and 2010 Open champion Louis Oosthuizen.

Sharing fifth on five-under were American Patrick Reed, Italy's Francesco Molinari and South African Louis Oosthuizen, the only major victor in the hunt. He had three consecutive bogeys on his back nine to fall off the lead.

Put alongside his earlier rounds of 72-73 and 76, he finished at 15-over 299 and in dead last position 75th.

Long-time leader Kevin Kisner went back to seven-under when he birdied the 15th, but three shots dropped from there saw him slip back to four-under, while Chris Stroud also struggled in the final group with a 76.

19 of the past 21 major champions have been inside the top-25 in the world at the time of their victory.

Thomas closed with a 3-under 68 to emerge from the shadow of Jordan Spieth, his longtime friend, and capture his first major, which belonged as much to him as to the two generations of PGA professionals who came before him.

He becomes the third different first-time major victor this year, joining Sergio Garcia, who won the Masters, and Brooks Koepka, who won the U.S. Open.

Rory McIlroy is considering a break from golf to deal with a back muscle injury that left his left arm numb after his final round at the PGA Championship. At only 24 years and 3 months of age, Thomas became the fourth youngest player to win the PGA Championship. But it was Thomas who surged ahead by chipping in a birdie at the thirteenth hole.

His victory continues the trend of first-time major winners.

"I don't know what I'm going to do", said McIlroy.

The ball suspended between the cup and lip for nearly 12 seconds before dropping may well have been the moment of the 99th PGA Championships.

Durant said that they are hoping Thomas will be able to visit the Country Club, maybe with his Wanamaker Trophy, sometime in the near future.

The week began with Spieth's quest for a career Grand Slam.
