Liverpool play hosts to Sevilla to kick off their 2017-18 UEFA Champions League campaign. But, Liverpool have not had the auspicious portents that they would have hoped for.

The Reds were picked apart after Sadio Mane was shown a straight red card in the first-half. It is not the first time and it won't be the last time in history when similar things will happen.

If Liverpool manage to beat Sevilla well, a top-of-the-group finish becomes more probable, which could mean progress in the competition.

The 24-year-old German surprisingly replaced his counterpart for the 4-0 win over Arsenal last month but Belgium global Mignolet was restored for Saturday's 5-0 defeat at Manchester City.

Much has changed at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium since Unai Emery guided it to a third successive Europa League title with victory over Liverpool two seasons ago.

Despte his heroics in South America, Klopp did not think his playmaker was fit enough to take part in the defeat at City. The German did impress in the 4-0 win over Arsenal and it will be interesting to see if he is able to put on another solid display on Wednesday.

The game will be played at Anfield.

The Champions League opener is a repeat of the 2016 Europa League final, where Los Rojiblancos triumphed 3-1 after falling a goal behind.

Liverpool have won the European Cup/Champions League on five occasions, more than any other English side.

Mane will miss Saturday's Premier League visit of Burnley plus the Carabao Cup/league double-header with Leicester next week. Close-season signing Mohamed Salah has formed a quick understanding with Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.

Luis Muriel could have won it for Sevilla in injury time, but shot wide from inside the box, before Reds defender Joe Gomez was dismissed for a second bookable offence. It would be their final shot on goal of the afternoon. Similarly, Moreno might make way for Robertson and Mignolet for Karius.

If Klopp decides to use Coutinho in midfield it could force either Emre Can or Gini Wijnaldum to drop out. Ever Banega is available for the away side after serving a suspension at the weekend.

Liverpool went looking for the equaliser straight away, and only had to wait until the 21st minute to find it. Alberto Moreno was the creator, cutting the ball back from the byline for Roberto Firmino to guide home easily.

"If you look at the players and some of their performances, you can say why not have a go at the Champions League".
