His protection was predictably porous - Watson took three sacks and spent a decent chunk of the thirty-two minutes Houston had the ball running away from the Bengals' pass rush - but some of the Texans' struggles were on him.

"Being able to have my first start on my birthday was pretty emotional", Watson said.

Texans's head coach Bill O'Brien gave a great post-game speech on Thursday night after their win over the Cincinnati Bengals.

A good rule of thumb when things aren't going well offensively is to get the ball to your best player.

Jackson had a record night, picking up the first sack of his eight-year career when he took down Andy Dalton for a loss of four yards on the Bengals first offensive series. The blockers played well enough to escape with a badly needed road win to get the season back on track, but Watson won't thrive until the big guys in front of him do the same.

"This is special. Looking back, from when I was a little boy, this is what I've dreamed of", Watson told the media after the game. "They asked me what my backup plan was, and I never had one". I figured that was the only way out of my neighborhood. "Just show it to me". Lay the points with the home team on a short week.

There wasn't a lot of it, but the defense did look strong in its second week without Vontaze Burfict, led by Geno Atkins. The rookie passer was flushed out of the pocket and broke free for a 49-yard touchdown run.

As if falling to a quarterback making his first career start weren't dejecting enough, Cincinnati's offensive struggles have landed it in the National Football League history books. "Everybody has weapons. They have high paid receivers, cornerbacks. He just did a nice job".

After Thursday's game, he said he had to check if his finger was still attached.

Ka'imi Fairbairn made two field goals for the Texans (26 and 42 yards). The Texans' tight-end depth chart was obliterated by concussions, with C.J. Fiedorowicz, who was on Tuesday placed on injured reserve, Ryan Griffin, and Stephen Anderson all concussed against the Jaguars.

Offensively, the Texans are averaging 7.0 points and 203.0 total yards (110.0 in passing and 93.0 in rushing).

With Houston facing an uphill climb with second and 21, Lamar Miller would get six yards on a dump-off pass. Houston tries to make it a 2-1 start to their season next week as they visit Tom Brady and the New England Patriots.
